Naked Traveller’s 20 travel truths
ONE of the best things about travel is how unpredictable it can be.
No matter how much research and planning you do, as soon as you take that first step out the door, all bets are off. Except, of course, when it comes to the “travel truths”.
These are the things that happen to me with a shrug of inevitability whenever I travel. They seem to follow me around the globe and feel as much a part of my travel identity as my passport.
I’ve listed 20 of my favourites below. Take a look and tell me if they’ve happened to you. Are they universals or does every traveller have their own?

- I do not get that upgrade I asked for
- The sweaty bloke or screaming baby I spy in the departure lounge ends up sitting next to me
- The air stewardess runs out of my first choice meal one row ahead of me
- My bags are never first off at the carousel
- Whichever queue I choose at customs it’s always the slowest
- I get the officer who thinks I’ve arrived to terrorise and pillage
- Whenever I get money exchanged I always feel like I’m being ripped off
- At the hostel or hotel, the shower is either too hot or too cold
- At the bar, someone will whisper into my ear: “If only you weren’t in a relationship…”
- In the bedroom, I hear people having “sexual relations” through the walls
- Someone will tell me how much less than me they paid for my flight/tour/hotel
-I misread a map and ask “a local” for directions only to find out they’re a tourist
- I haggle over something I’d just go ahead and buy at home for the ticket price
- I get the exchange rate mixed up and pay over the odds for a “bargain”
- I become confused by a country’s tipping system and leave either too much or too little
- I am underwhelmed by a famous site I thought I would be blown away by
- I buy some form of top-up or phone credit card and have no idea how to use it
- I fret about how big my bill for international roaming will be when I get back
- My suitcase is over the weight limit and I have to I leave something behind I really like
- No matter how far off I am I will bump into someone I went to school/college/work with
